Toni Minichiello to headline ANI 2017 Coaching Conference

The 2017 Athletics Northern Ireland Coaching Conference will take place on Saturday 7thOctober at Ulster University, Jordanstown and will feature a range of experts including Dame Mary Peters, Toni Minichiello, Dr John Rogers, Honore Hoedt and Deirdre Ryan.

Coach Development Lead, Laura Kerr explains “our annual coaching conference has grown year on year and with our current focus on talent identification, athlete development, physical preparation and integrated service provision I am delighted with the line-up of speakers we are able to deliver in 2017. This year’s conference theme is ‘Creating the Talent Development Environment’. Dame Mary Peters will provide insight into the value of coaching throughout her career and will introduce keynote speaker Toni Minichiello.”

Minichiello is unique in the world of coaching having nurtured Jessica Ennis Hill through her 18 year career to Olympic and World gold medals. Toni will describe his philosophy on long term athlete development and will use examples from his experience with Jessica. He will discuss how he has facilitated and directed the services of sport scientists, the impact it has made and how he has differentiated training for a squad of athletes training for different events. Later in the day, there will be a break-out session on planning and periodising training for multi-events.

Dr John Rogers has worked with British Athletics and Team GB as a medical officer and will offer his perspective on developing and sustaining health for well-being and performance. In the second keynote of the day John will discuss optimising performance and preventing injury through planning and programme management.

Former Irish Olympic high jumper Deirdre Ryan will offer a high jump masterclass and discuss her mentoring experience with Commonwealth Youth Games Gold Medallist Sommer Lecky and her coach Niall Wilkinson.

Dutchman, Honoré Hoedt, the coach of European 1500m Champion Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands has been Norway’s head middle and long distance coach. Having coached athletes to five Olympic Games Honore is one of Europe’s leading authorities on middle distance running and will offer a breakout session discussing his role in talent identification and development for middle and long distance.

Director of Coaching and Athlete Development, Jackie Newton, said “As we look ahead to next year’s Commonwealth Games and beyond, this conference serves as an excellent opportunity for local coaches to come together and immerse themselves in current best practice. I believe this conference will meet the needs of club coaches striving to develop talent and performance coaches working with integrated support teams. I look forward to spending time with Northern Ireland’s coaching community and encourage you to book your place quickly for this exciting opportunity.”
