Athletics NI host endurance camp in Murcia

Ciara Mageean at Athletics NI's endurace training camp in Murcia, Spain.

Athletics NI have taken five endurance athletes from the Podium Potential and Commonwealth Potential squads for a supported training camp in Murcia, Spain.

Ciara Mageean (Steve Vernon) and Paul Pollock (Andy Hobdell) from our 2018 Commonwealth Games Squad were joined by Kerry O’Flaherty (Richard Rodgers), Breege Connoly (Donie Walsh) and Laura Graham (Ryan Maxwell), in benefitting from warm weather and fabulous running trails as well as the track, gym and restaurant at University of Murcia.

The group have also benefited from linking in with the New Balance and Welsh Athletics endurance squads, providing our athletes with fabulous training partners.

Additionally, the support provided by Sport NI Sports Institute physiologist Ricky McCann, and physiotherapist Sarah Tunstall, has been superb for monitoring, informing training and enhancing recovery between sessions.

Paul Pollock said: "It's always a great experience training with other athletes who are working towards the same goal. From a personal point of view, I'm training very well and looking forward to competing again over the next few months''.

Breege Connolly added, "It's been great to get the chance to come away and train with fellow NI athletes. I have particularly benefited from having other girls to train with''.

Kerry O' Flaherty said, "We've hit this camp at just the right time, leaving the colder weather behind. It's always great at this time of year to come away and integrate with other training groups and try somewhere different.

''Murcia is somewhere I will come back to. The trails have been excellent as well as the University facilities including the track and gym. On behalf of myself and the other athletes, I'd like to thank Athletics NI for this opportunity."
