Ciara Mageean Named Irish Athlete of the Year

City of Lisburn and Team New Balance athlete, Ciara Mageean was named as the Athlete of the Year at last night’s Irish Life Health National Athletics Awards in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown.

The 27-year old was the first Irish athlete to reach a World Championship final in the 1500m at the recent Championships in Doha. She also picked up the award for Track & Field Athlete of the year.

It was a successful night for Northern Irish Female athletes, as Heptathlete, Kate O’Connor (Dundalk St Gerards AC) was named the U20 Athlete of the Year, after winning silver at the European Athletics U20 Championships with a National Senior Record of 6093 points.

Carmen Runners’ Eilish Flanagan was named the U23 Athlete of the Year, after winning Silver at the European U23 Championships in the 3000m Steeplechase.

Also recognised were the Irish Record Holders for 2019, Kate O’Connor for the Heptathlon Senior Record of 6093 points and Ellie McCartney for the Pole Vault U23 Record of 4.01m.
