Irish Medal Success at European Cross Country

It was an exciting weekend of Cross Country for the large Irish team as they collected two team and two individual medals at the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon, Portugal.

Among the team where Northern Ireland and Ulster’s Ciara Mageean (City of Lisburn Ac/Team New Balance); Fionnuala Ross (Armagh AC); Roisin Flanagan (Carmen Runners); Eilish Flanagan (Carmen Runners) and Conor Bradley (City of Derry Spartans).

In the Senior Women’s 8k event, both Mageean and Ross were put to the test on the challenging course, along with their Irish team mates. Mageean was the 2nd Irish women across the line, finishing in 20th place, while Ross finished in 47th place. The Irish Women’s team finished with a total of 41 points overall to secure the Silver medal, just behind GB & NI with 36 points. In 3rd place was Portugal with 43 points.

In the earlier Women’s U23 race, the ladies put on an impressive show right from the gun. The Adams State University and Carmen Runners duo of Eilish and Roisin Flanagan helped their team exceed all expectations to earn themselves the Silver medal with a total of 29 points. The twins had a very successful race, with Eilish finishing in 9th place and Roisin finishing in 17th place. The team placed just behind gold medal winners, the Netherlands with 17 points, while GB & NI took 3rd place with 40 points.

City of Derry Spartans’ Conor Bradley completed the Senior Men’s 10,255m event in a solid 52nd place, with Irish team mate, Sean Tobin finishing in 18th place. The team finished in 13th place overall in an extremely challenging field.
