Irish Team 2nd in European Combined Events in Portugal

Three Northern Ireland and Ulster Ladies made up the Female team for Ireland at the European Combined Events 2nd League in Ribeira Brava on 6th and 7th July 2019.

The Team came 2nd overall with 35821 total points, just behind the winners, Belgium with 38165 points. In 3rd place was Denmark with 34240 points.

Leading the ladies team was 18 year old, Anna McCauley (City of Lisburn AC) who finished in 7th place overall with a new PB total of 5114 points. Anna’s 100m Hurdles time was 14.72s (w/s -0.1) and she cleared 1.72m in the High Jump before gaining a new PB in the Shot Put of 11.08m. She then finished the 200m in 25.12s (w/s 0.6) and then jumped 5.5m in the Long Jump. She completed the Javelin with a throw of 25.13m and the 800m in a time of 2:22.11s.

Next for the Irish team was North Down AC’s Sarah Connolly, who finished in 11th place with a score of 4990 points. Sarah finished the 100m Hurdles in 14.85s (w/s 0.1) and cleared 1.72m in the High Jump. She then threw 10.27m in the Shot Put. She then ran a new PB time of 25.48s (w/s -0.1) in the 200m, before jumping 5.48m in the Long Jump. Sarah then threw 27.25m in the Javelin and finished in 2:26.27s in the 800m.

Next up was Laura Frey (Lagan Valley AC) who finished in 20th place with 4481 points and a host of PBs. She finished the 100m Hurdles in a PB time of 15.32 (w/s 0.3) before clearing 1.54m, another new PB in the High Jump. She threw 9.71m in the Shot Put, before gaining a new PB in the 200m, where she finished in 25.83s (w/s 0.6). She jumped 4.88m in the Long Jump and threw 21.17m in the Javelin before finishing her successful day with the 800m, in a time of 2:17.72s.

Elsewhere this weekend…

The Irish team were in full force at the European Mountain Running Championships in Zermatt on 7th July 2019.

Among the team was Newcastle & District AC’s Zak Hanna, who finished in 19th place in the Senior Men’s race in a time of 57:27s, just over four minutes behind the winner, GB’s Jacob Adkin who finished in 53:21s. This was Zak’s second time finishing in the Top 20 at this event.

In the Junior Men’s event, Ronain Maguire (OMG AC) finished in 24th place in 32:23.10, ahead of St Malachy’s Tony McCambridge finished in 28th place in a time of 32:39.5, with Jared Martin (Scrabo Striders) finished in 43rd place in a time of 34:45.40.

In the Junior Women’s event the team came 10th overall, with Ella Quinn (Omagh Harriers) finishing in 35th place in a time of 41:14.70, behind IMRA teammate, Aoife Coffey in 22nd place in a time of 38:45.0. Ella’s club mates, Sorcha Mullan (Omagh Harriers) finished in 41st place in a time of 42:55.70, while Niamh Heaney (Omagh Harriers) finished in 44th in a time of 46:55.90.
