Local Athletes Open Indoor Season with Personal Bests

Three Northern Ireland and Ulster athletes kicked off their 2018 indoor track and field season this weekend with personal best performances (Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th January 2018).

Letterkenny AC pair Danny Mooney and Eoin Hughes delivered impressive results over 3,000m at the Glasgow Athletics Association/Scottish Athletics Miler Meeting, held in the famous Emirates Stadium (Sunday 7th January 2018).

Danny’s race attracted significant media attention because of Laura Muir’s participation, but the 2014 Commonwealth Games athlete created his own headlines with an notable personal best of 8:22.13 for 2nd place.

The race was won by Sol Sweeney (Perth RR) in 8:19.03 (1st place).  Laura Muir (Dundee Hawkhill Harriers) won the ladies race in 8:37.21 (1st place).  Eoin also got 2018 off to a good start – also racing over 3,000m, he recorded a massive personal best of 9:10.88; this was enough for 4th place in his race.

Sarah Connolly (North Down AC) was in action at the England Athletics U23 / Senior Combined Events Championships in Sheffield (Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th January 2018).  Sarah topped the standings in the Long Jump, leaping to 5.54m, a mere 0.05m outside her personal best.

Sarah also came close to her personal bests in the High Jump, where she reached 1.74m and the 60m hurdles, running 8.99.

The North Down AC athlete finished the competition on 3534 points (7th place Under 23 and 12th place overall), a new personal best; this bodes well for the season ahead.

On the roads…

Northern Ireland’s Kevin Seaward (St Malachy’s AC / Cardiff AC) impressed at the Telford 10k in England (Sunday 7th January 2017).  Up against a top quality field at the re-scheduled event, Rio Olympian Kevin recorded an excellent 29:36 for 7th place.  The race was won by Charlie Hulson (Sale Harriers Manchester) in 29:12 (1st place).
