Muggy conditions for Pollock in the Half Marathon

In the inaugural European Half Marathon Annadale's Paul Pollock ignored the muggy warm conditions and worked his way through the field with  an impressive 1st lap 10k time of  30 mins 17 secs . He eventually finished as first Irishman in 17th position in a time of 64 mins 58 secs. Mick Clohisey was 32nd in 66 mins followed by Kevin Seaward of St Malachy's  in 34th in 66 mins 20 secs. All these athletes will race in the Rio next month.

Sergiu Ciobanu who objected to Pollock's selection for Rio was nearly 3 mins in arrears in a time of 67.46 for 57th place. The race was won by Tedesse of Switzerland in 62.03.

A relieved Pollock said ;
" I am very happy to be the first Irishman home. I have just come off a big block of training and am looking forward to Rio. Sergiu has appealed to the Court of Arbitration against my selection for Rio but I think the result today bodes well for me and justifies my place. I am injury free and hope to do well in the Olympics " .

In the Women's race Clare McCarthy was 48th in 76 mins 2 secs while Gladys Ganiel of North Belfast was 71st in 78.06.
