19 December 2016

The sixth round of the Athletics Northern Ireland Cross Country league was held on Saturday 17th December in conjunction with the City of Derry Spartans promoted North West Championships at Gransha in Derry.

This was the final pre Christmas round and with teams choosing the best four of the six rounds to score we are now able to get a clear picture of the league standings to date.

In the Men’s Division  Newcastle and District on 104 points have overtaken North Belfast Harriers with 99 and last season’s champions Foyle Valley third on 86. Acorns (78), North Down (72) and Springwell (71) are in a dogfight for places 4 to 6.

In the Women’s Division North Down A.C. have maintained their dominance and are well clear on 111 points. However things are very tight for second place with Acorns on 84 and Foyle Valley on 80. Tafelta are a little further back in fourth place on 63 points.

The next round will be on Saturday 14th January in conjunction with the ANTRIM INTERNATIONAL at Cafre‘s Greenmount Campus near Antrim.  Then the final round will be on Saturday 4th March in conjunction with the NI & Ulster Senior Championships at Lurgan. This final round will attract double points so it is clear there is still all to run for both at the top and for the minor places.
