Shining Start to the National Age Group Championships

Sunday 7th July was a fine start to the National Age Group Championships, with good weather and some brilliant performances from the NI & Ulster athletes who travelled to Tullamore, collecting a total of 25 medals in Day 1 of the competition.

In the Hurdles events, City of Derry Spartans’ Veronica O’Neill took gold in the U14 Girls 75mH in a time of 11.47s, while her club mate, Eimear Kelly took gold in the U18 Girls 100mH (times TBC). Tir Chonaill AC’s Niamh Moonhan won the top spot in the U16 Girls 80mH in a time of 11.78s and Cian O’Connell (St Colmans AC) won the u18 Boys 110mH in 15.62s, with Eoin Sharkey (Tir Chonaill AC) in 3rd place in 16.28s. Riona Doherty (Finn Valley AC) was 2nd in the U13 Girls 60mH in 10.05s and Ben Campbell (Tir Chonaill AC) was 2nd in the U16 Boys 100mH in 13.77s. Lifford Strabane AC’s Diarmaid O’Donnell took 3rd place in the U15 Boys 80mH in 12.29s.

Oisin Kelly (Cranford AC) took 1st place in the U16 Boys 800m in 2:03.50, with Patrick McDaid (Letterkenny AC) in 3rd place in 2:04.87. City of Derry Spartans’ Finn O’Neill came 2nd in the U15 Boys 800m in a time of 2:04.83, to take the Irish title behind guest athlete, Marcus Reilly, with 3 Ways AC’s Caolan O’Hare in 3rd place in 2:05.31. Willowfield Harriers’ Dylan McBride came 2nd in the U17 Boys 800m in 1:59.22, while Aine Corcoran (Shercock AC) came 2nd in the U19 Girls 800m in 2:21.64.

In the U17 Girls 2000m Steeplechase, Kate Devlin (City of Derry Spartans) came 2nd in a time of 8:05.33.

Michaela Galvin (Letterkenny AC) claimed 1st place in the U16 Girls Triple Jump, with a jump of 10.56m. In the U18 Girls Triple Jump, Finn Valley AC’s Lauren Callaghan came 1st with a jump of 11.18m and Micheala Byrne came 2nd, jumping 10.69m. Ballymena & Antrim AC’s Cameron Leighton took 1st place in the U19 Boys Triple Jump with a jump of 12.40m and Joshua Knox (City of Lisburn AC) came 3rd in the U18 Boys Triple Jump in 13.00m.

City of Lisburn AC’s Daniel Scott took the bronze medal in the U16 Boys High Jump, clearing 1.78m and Tori Murchan (Tir Chonaill AC) also claimed bronze in the u15 Girls High Jump, clearing 1.50m.

Blaine Lynch (Finn Valley AC) won the U14 Boys Javelin with a throw of 50.94m.

Lifford Strabane AC’s Adrienne Gallen came 1st in the U16 Girls Hammer with a throw of 51.75m and her club mate, Una O’Donnell came 3rd in the U15 Girls Hammer, throwing 36.16m.

We would like to congratulate all the athletes taking part in Day 1 of the Championships. Day 2 and 3 of the National Age Group Championships will take place in Tullamore this weekend, 13th and 14th July.
