Weekend Review The Mathieson Cup

North Belfast Harriers’ Mark McKinstry was crowned the winner of the Men’s event at Sunday’s Mathieson Cup Cross Country, organised by Mallusk Harriers, while Karen Wilton (Jog Lisburn Running Club) secured 1st place in the Ladies event.

McKinstry finished in a time of 26:41 to take the top spot, followed by his club mate, Eamon White in 2nd place in a time of 27:33. City of Derry Spartans’ Allan Bogle completed the podium in 3rd place in a time of 27:53.

For the Ladies event, Karen Wilton (Jog Lisburn Running Club) secured 1st place in a time of 23:50. She was followed by Willowfield Harriers’ Amy Bulman in 2nd place in a time of 23:52 and Dub Runners’ Claire Tonry in 3rd place in a time of 24:20.

The Male Vet 60+ race went to Norman Mawhinney (Scrabo Striders) in a time of 25:14. In 2nd place was Springwell Running Club’s Gerry O’Doherty in 25:15, followed by Eric Montgomery (Lagan Valley AC) in 3rd place in a time of 26:49.

The Primary School events had a fantastic turn out, with over 100 children taking part in the two races. Willowfield Harriers' Emily Morris came 1st in the Girls 800m in a time of 2:30, with Springwell Running Club’s Adria McAllister in 2nd place in 2:42, followed by Armagh AC’s Ava Doran in 3rd place in 2:43. City of Lisburn AC’s Ashton Cusick won the Boys 800m event in a time of 2:22, followed by Shea King (Magilligan AC) in 2nd place in 2:24 and Evan Tosh (Hi Elbow Triathlon) in 3rd place in 2:28.

In the U12 Boys 1k race, Lagan Valley Ac’s Scott Owen claimed 1st place in a time of 3:35. He was followed by Luke O’Doherty (Mid Ulster Ac) in 2nd place in 3:40 and Deivs Tarvids (Enniskillen Running Club) in 3rd place in 3:46. Lagan Valley  AC’s Abigail Curran came 1st in the U12 Girls 1k event in a time of 3:49. She was followed by Willowfield duo, Elsa Montgomery in 2nd place in 3:52 and Kari Foster in 3rd place in 3:55.

East Down Ac’s Anna Gardiner won the U14 Girls 2k race in a time of 7:00, with Lagan Valley AC’s Isa McCarron in 2nd place in 7:17 and Dromore Ac’s Lily Rimmer in 3rd place in 7:39. For the Boys U14 2k race 1st place went to Hugo Reilly (North Belfast Harriers) in a time of 7:01, with Oliver Robinson (East Down AC) in 2nd place in 7:06 and Sean Corry (St Michael’s Enniskillen) in 3rd place in 7:08.

The U17 Boys 4k event was won by Springwell Running Club’s Matthew Beveridge in a time of 13:47. He was followed by St Malachy AC’s Luke Ferris in 2nd place in a time of 13:55 and Loughview AC’s Kyle Thompson in 3rd place in 14:25. Willowfield Harriers’ Lucy Foster won the U17 Girls 4k event in a time of 15:18, with Loughview AC duo of Rebecca Rossiter in 2nd place in 16:02 and Isabella Perry closely behind in 3rd place in 16:07.

Elsewhere this weekend….

A record number of athletes took part at Saturday’s Athletics NI Indoor Sprints & Hurdles Meet at the Ulster University, Jordanstown.

There were a number of PBs as athletes took in their first competition of the 2020 Indoor season, with the highlight of the meeting coming from Ballymena & Antrim’s Dean Adams with a new Track Record and PB of 6.82 seconds in the Senior Men’s 60 sprints.

City of Lisburn AC’s Lauren Roy had an equally impressive performance in the Senior Women’s 60m Sprints, with a time of 7.55seconds in Race 1 and then bettering that in Round 2 with a time of 7.52secs.

Athletics NI will be hosting our Pole Vault competition on Friday 17th January, as well as the annual ANI Indoor- Jumps & Throws Meet on Saturday 18th January at the Ulster University. For more details, see below:
