Weekend Round-Up Combined Events athletes collect team medals in Scotland

Six local athletes picked up team medals whilst representing Ireland at the Schools International Combined Events Championships in Scotland this weekend (Saturday 3rd November 2018).

Finlay Stewart (Belfast High School), Jordan Cunningham (St Malachy’s College Belfast), Troy McConville (Craigavon Senior HS), Niamh McCorry (Loreto College Cavan), Molly Curran (St Ciaran’s College, Ballygawley) and Niamh Moohan (Abbey Vocational School, Donegal) all impressed as they took on teams from England, Scotland and Wales at the famous Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

Finlay Stewart recorded personal bests in the 60m hurdles (9.17), 800m (2.12.96) and Long Jump (5.78m) on his way to a total of 2945 points.  This saw the City of Lisburn athlete secure 7th place overall and helped his Ireland team, which included Alex O’Shea, Dillon Ryan and individual medallist Harry Nevin to 3rd place in the team competition.

Also in the junior category, Molly Curran and Niamh Moohan collected bronze medals alongside team mates Katie Noike and individual podium finisher Laura Frawley.  Individually, Molly claimed 12th place with 3024 points and Niamh was just behind with 2953 points (13th place).

Northern Ireland athletes Jordan Cunningham and Troy McConville stepped onto the podium to pick up team bronze medals alongside Wymin Sivakumar and Diarmuid O’Connor, after the boy’s claimed 7th place and 8th place respectively.  Jordan finished on 3409 points, with Troy reaching 3391 points.

Niamh McCorry secured a top ten place in the individual competition after totalling 3092 points (10th place).  This assisted her team, which included Chloe Casey, Niamh O’Neill and Maeve Haynes to 3rd place in the team standings.

Karol Duggan and Nakita Burke crowned Donegal XC Champions:

Kenyan star Gideon Kimosop (Derry Track Club) was a runaway winner in the men’s 10k race and Nikita Burke (Letterkenny AC) edged a close ladies 5k race as athletes contested the Donegal XC Championships this weekend (Sunday 4th November 2018).

Gideon Kimosop broke the tape in 31:23, but it was 2nd place finisher Karol Duggan who picked up the gold medal after following in 33:04 (2nd place).  Finn Valley AC’s Gerard Gallagher (33:15) ran well to finish in 3rd place and the silver medal position, while Ciaran Doherty (Letterkenny AC) completed the Championship podium in 33:20 (4th place).

In the ladies race, Nikita Burke (Letterkenny AC) edged an epic encounter, covering the 5k course in 17:48 (1st place) – this was just one second ahead of Finn Valley AC’s Teresa Doherty, who picked up the silver medal in 17:49 (2nd place).  Lifford Strabane AC’s Claire McGuigan claimed 3rd place in 18:20.

In the team competition, Letterkenny AC won the men’s top prize, while Finn Valley AC secured top honours in the ladies competition.

Fionnuala Ross clocked PB en-route to victory in Leeds:

Northern Ireland and Ireland international Fionnuala Ross (Armagh AC / Dermot Kerr) recorded a new personal best of 33:30 (1st place) as she claimed top honours at the prestigious Leeds Abbey Dash (Sunday 4th November 2018).

In the men’s race, Kevin Seaward (St Malachy’s AC / Andrew Hobdell) secured 9th place in 30:05, while fellow Olympian Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders / Andrew Hobdell) ran 31:15 for 43rd place.  Foyle Valley AC’s Scott Rankin followed closely in 31:35 (51st place).
