Volunteering with Belfast City Marathon for over 30 years
08 March 2016
A special award has been presented to Willowfield Temperance Harriers in recognition of the 30+ years they have dedicated to the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon as volunteers.
Willowfield Temperance Harriers are a club based in East Belfast who train runners of all ages and abilities who are interested in the enjoyment of keeping physically fit or the buzz of the competition. Through their ambitions of enhancing the reputation and accessibility of running as a sport and an activity worth taking part in, they started volunteering with the Belfast City Marathon over 30 years ago.
Lawson Cochrane, Head Coach with Willowfield Temperance Harriers; “Our ambition is greater than the confines of our own club, and we consider it important to support events like the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon which has the ability to champion the sport of long distance running.
“We have probably undertaken most, if not all, of the different volunteering roles over the last 30 years; Finish Pen Marshals, Start Area Assistants and Water station marshals. Most recently we have staffed the water station at the latter part of the route around Central Station, and provided the front car passenger on Race Day to direct the drivers.”
“We have runners who compete at the marathon and we are aware that without the volunteers and those who organize the event, our athletes would not have the opportunity to compete locally at this distance and level. We also enjoy working alongside other volunteers who have an interest in our chosen sport and it is good to help deliver a prestigious event for our City of Belfast.”
Event Manager, Claire O’Neill praised Lawson and all his team at Willowfield Temperance Harriers for their hardwork and dedication over the years;
“I am delighted that Willowfield Temperance Harriers has been awarded this prize. Over my 10 years in the event, Lawson and has team has proved loyal and reliable to our events – providing over 20 volunteers each year to assist on Race Day. Their dedication and interest in athletics is first class and we encourage more members of the public to come forward and help us.”
“We need over 600 volunteers on Race Day to help us organize a safe, successful and enjoyable event – so fingers crossed many will follow by Lawson’s perfect example.”
Lawson Cochrane agrees, “Give it a go, it’s worth a try! A willing volunteer is always better than a conscript!”
All volunteers will receive a special medal for their contribution and their name will be listed in the Official Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon Programmes.
