Ciara Mageean betters World Championships and CWG 1500m Standards

Multiple Northern Ireland record holder Ciara Mageean (UCD AC / Jerry Kiernan) achieved IAAF World Championships and Commonwealth Games qualifying standards over 1500m whilst competing at the prestigious Golden Gala Diamond League Meeting in Rome last night (Thursday 8th June 2017).

The Portaferry based athlete recorded 4:04.49 to secure 10th place against top quality opposition.  In what was a fast race, Ciara produced a disciplined performance to ensure she returned home with the qualification standards.  Staying clear of some early bumping, the local athlete held an inside line towards the rear of the field for much of the race, before moving through well with a strong finish.  Sifan Hassan (Netherlands) won in 3:56.22 (1st place).

Ciara joins a list of local talent who have reached the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games standard, with Ben Reynolds (North Down AC), Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley AC), Dempsey McGuigan (Finn Valley AC), Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders), Emma Mitchell (QUB AC), Adam McMullan (Crusaders AC), Adam Kirk-Smith (Derry Track Club) and Amy Foster (City of Lisburn AC) all hoping to be included in the final squad.

European Athletics Championships 1500m bronze medallist, Ciara, is scheduled to compete over 800m at the NI & Ulster Senior Track & Field Championships this weekend (Saturday 10th June 2017).
