JUNIOR STARS SECURE IMPRESSIVE MEDAL HAUL IN ATHLONE

28 March 2017

Local athletes returned from this weekend’s Irish Life AAI National Juvenile Uneven Age Group Indoor Track & Field Championships (Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th March 2017) in Athlone, Ireland with a stunning haul of 27 medals; 13 of these were gold medals.

Davicia Patterson (Beechmount Harriers), Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn AC), Shane Martin (Ballymena & Antrim AC), Kate O’Connor (St Gerard’s AC) and Finn Valley’s duo Sommer Lecky and Janine Boyle may have stolen the headlines with stunning performances – but overall, it was a weekend when Northern Ireland and Ulster’s brightest prospects showed their worth.

Rising star Davicia Patterson won the U-18 girls 400m in a European U-20 qualifying time of 55.54, while Lauren Roy lived up to expectation with an excellent 7.65 to win the U-18 girls 60m event.  Kate O’Connor smashed the NI U-18 shot put record with a 14.21m throw for gold on Day 1 of the exciting Championships; Kate then jumped a personal best of 1.75m for silver in the high jump.

There were double gold medals for club mates Sommer Lecky and Janine Boyle - Sommer won the U-18 girls long jump with 5.49m and the high jump with 1.75m, and Janine claimed gold in the U-19 girls long jump with 5.46m and won the 60m in 7.62.  Shane Martin was in top form with a 4.25m performance in the U-19 pole vault, which was enough to see the Ballymena & Antrim athlete collect gold.

Finn Valley’s Lauren Callaghan again showed her potential with a gold medal winning performance in the U-16 long jump with 5.41m.  Fellow club mate James Kelly was a clear winner in the U-18 shot put with 16.70m.  Tony Craig (Lagan Valley AC) sprinted to victory in the U-15 60m, breaking the beam in a speedy 7.55 for gold.

U-19 athlete Abbie O’Neill (Ballymena & Antrim AC) was another familiar face who impressed on the jumps and was duly rewarded for her 2.30m in the pole vault with a gold medal.  Lifford-Strabane’s Shannon Craig followed suit with 1.63m in the U-19 high jump which saw her collect gold.
