Mitchell 9th in World University Games 10 000 Metres

23 August 2017

Banbridge's Emma Mitchell finished 9th in the World University Games 10,000 metres in Taipei, which was run in extremely humid conditions that significantly affected the race times.

The 23 year old QUB student recorded a time of 34 minutes 51.62 seconds, which was some way off her NI record set back in May. However in her first major international competition Emma managed to beat GB international Louise Small. The 16 person race was won by the Asian champion Daria Maslova of Kyrgyzstan in 33 minutes 19.27 seconds. Britain's Jennifer Nesbitt was 5th.

Emma commented, "I am pleased to perform ok in my first major competition. The humidity was a killer and I had to take water every two laps. I didn't get distressed but the conditions obviously slowed my pace".

The determined Mitchell will now take time out to recover for Sunday's 5,000 metres, which is now a straight final.
