This week saw the official launch of the 2016 Pure Running Laganside 10km which takes place on Sunday 4th September, 2pm at Ormeau Park, Belfast.

Lord Mayor of Belfast Alderman Brian Kingston joined members of host club North Belfast Harriers and representatives of sponsors Pure Running and Belfast City Council/GLL Leisure Centres on the banks of the Lagan to celebrate the upcoming event.

Entries are capped at 1,250, and it is expected that the race will sell out, as it has for the past several years.

Finishers of the popular race will receive a bespoke medal. Youngsters can take part in the 1 Mile Children’s Fun Run for boys and girls 6-15 years old.  This event will start at 1.15 pm and is contested on a safe, marshalled and flat route within Ormeau Park.

The Laganside 10km is known for being a top-class event organised by experienced volunteers from North Belfast Harriers. The Laganside 10km is the ideal “tune up” race for those considering running in the Belfast City Half Marathon on September 18. Its flat course always produces a number of personal best times.

The race is also part of the Novosco 10k Grand Prix, a not-for-profit 10km running race competition starting in March 2016 and continuing until November 2016. It consists of 13 accurately measured and certified races, including permits from Athletics Northern Ireland and chip timing services as provided by ChampionChip Ireland. At the conclusion of the Grand Prix, individual runners and teams will be awarded prizes based on age grading.

Commenting on this year’s event, race director Matt Shields of North Belfast Harriers said:

“North Belfast Harriers strive to make the Laganside 10km one of the top days out for running in the city of Belfast. We cater for everyone, from runners trying the 10km for the first time, to experienced runners pushing themselves to achieve a personal best. Our children’s fun run is an important component of the day, as the whole family can join in the fun.”

As usual, the Harriers and local shop Pure Running are providing refreshments after the race and generous category prizes in the Open and Masters categories (35+).

Entry fees are a reasonable £15 for Athletics Northern Ireland affiliated runners and £17 for unaffiliated runners.

The entry fee for the children’s race is only £3 and includes goody bags and medals for all children. Special medals will also be presented to first and second placed children in the following categories: Under 7; Under 9; Under 11; Under 13 and Under 15.

Times for all children will be recorded but the focus of the 1 mile event is on fun and participation so adults will be allowed to run alongside younger competitors if they wish.

Runners for both the 10km and 1 mile events can now enter online at www.laganside10k.com. Online entries close 28 August.

Any queries about entries, the races, fund raising or prizes should be posted on the official Laganside 10km Facebook page or to the North Belfast Harriers Twitter account (@nbharriers).
