Athletes Excel at AAI Games

Athletes from across NI and Ulster travelled to the AIT, Athlone at the weekend to compete in the annual AAI Games on Sunday 29th January.

The Men’s 3000m event was dominated by athletes from Northern Ireland, with City of Lisburn AC’s James Edgar claiming 1st place with a PB of 8:09.02; 2nd place went to Annadale Striders, Neil Johnston with a PB of 8:09.99 and CNDR Track Club’s Callum Morgan finished in 3rd place in a time of 8:13.42.

In the sprint hurdles, Tir Chonaill AC’s Lucy McGlynn claimed 1st place in a time of 8.77, with club mate, Niamh Moohan finishing in 3rd place in 9.73.

In the Woman’s 1500m, Kelly Neely (City of Lisburn AC) crossed the line in 3rd with a time of 4:31.21, while in the Women’s 400m, Armagh AC’s Aoibheann Dempsey finished 1st in her heat, in a time of 59.08. Leading onto the Men’s 3000m Walk where Finn Valley AC’s Brendan Boyce came 2nd in 11:57.61. Annalee AC’s Cormac Crotty claimed 2nd place in heat 3 of the Men’s 400m in a time of 52.14.

On the field, Armagh AC’s Hannah Hayes competed in the Women’s High Jump, clearing a PB of 1.48m to take 1st place. In the Men’s Long Jump Omagh Harrier’s Harvey King finished in 2nd place with a jump of 6.05m, while Conall Mahon (Tir Chonaill AC) won 1st place in the Men’s Triple Jump with a jump of 14.70m. Ballymena & Antrim AC’s Abbie O’Neill cleared 3.10m in the Women’s Pole Vault to take 1st place.

The Women’s Shot Put competition saw a head to head between Tir Chonaill AC’s Geraldine Stewart and Finn Valley AC’s Bridget McDyer, with Stewart coming out on top with a throw of 11.35m, while McDyer finished in 2nd place throwing 9.37m. Bridget would then go onto a 2nd place in the Women’s Weight for Distance (28lb) with a throw of 6.09m.

The day’s action concluded with a bang thanks to the Irish U20 4x400m relay team of Tir Chonaill AC’s Lucy McGlynn, with team mates Kate O’Connell, Hannah Murray and Niamh Murray, who claimed the qualification standard for the European U20 Championships in Israel later this year with their 3:43:30 Irish U20 Record.
