Ciara Mageean Sets NI 3,000m Record

Ciara Mageean opened her indoor season, after the Christmas break, with an impressive win in the 3,000m event at the World Indoor Silver Tour Meeting in Manchester, setting a new NI record in the process.

Multi-NI record holder, Mageean, added to her tally with a new 3,000m record of 8:47.24, beating her previous record of 8:48.27 set at Athlone in 2020 and moving closer to the Irish Record of 8:43.74 set by Mary Cullen in 2009.

The Team New Balance athlete, beat Albania’s Luiza Gega with an impressive sprint in the last lap, leaving her in 2nd place in 8:47.53 with GB’s Verity Ockenden in 3rd place in a time of 8:51.17.

Finn Valley AC’s Sommer Lecky won Gold in the Senior Women’s High Jump at the Scottish Senior Championships, with a best jump of 1.79m.

The Commonwealth Youth Games gold medallist, started the competition with brilliant first attempts at 1.69m and 1.74m, following by a soaring clearance of 1.79m to secure the gold medal.
