FOUR LOCAL ATHLETES NAMED IN IRELANDS EURO UNDER 23 CHAMPIONSHIPS SQUAD

Four local athletes have been named in the Ireland team for the upcoming European Athletics Under 23 Track & Field Championships in Bydgoscz, Poland (13th-16th July 2017).

Crusaders AC’s Andrew Mellon (Brendan McConville) is rewarded for his hard work in returning from a lengthy injury lay-off with a place on the team.  Andrew will compete over 400m, both individually and as part of the 4x400m relay team.  The North Down man is capable of 46.80 over the distance. In-form Craig Newell (pictured above) will line up in the 4x400m relay and the NI & Ulster Champion, coached by Ian Neely, will be keen to continue his impressive run of personal bests – his current one-lap best is 47.31.

John Kelly (Finn Valley AC / John Kelly Snr) and Sarah McKeever (DSD AC / Laurie Needham) will compete in their respective Shot Putt and Pole Vault events.  Both secured gold at the NI & Ulster Senior Championships earlier this month – John won the Shot Putt (7.25kg) with a 16.11m throw, while Sarah excelled in the Pole Vault with a 3.90m clearance.
