First NI & Ulster athletes compete at European Championships

07 August 2018

Belfast's long jumper Adam McMullen competed yesterday in the first field event of the European Athletics Championships in Berlin .

The 28 year old Crusaders athlete faced strong  competition with only 12 of some 30 athletes qualifying for Wednesday's final. Adam's best jump was  7.47 metres which was insufficient for him to progress further. Top qualifier was Tentoglou of Greece with a leap of 8.15 metres .

Today's programme includes  Brendan Boyce of Finn Valley in the 50K Walk.

The 31 year old was unfortunate last year to sustain a hamstring injury just before the World Championships  in London . This was particularly frustrating as Brendan had just achieved his second fastest time ever time of 3 hrs 49 mins 49 secs. As his best time this year is over 3 mins slower he will be looking for an improvement in Berlin.

Clonliffe Harriers' Stephen Scullion will feature in the 10,000m later this evening.
