As marathon day approaches, the organsiers at the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon are excited to provide you with some exciting news! To celebrate the 36th year of the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon the organisers are delighted to announce that each relay participant will receive a uniquely crafted medal to take home!

Following the success of last year’s Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon, 2017 is shaping up to be just as exciting. With over 3000 runners ready to take to the road, it would be a shame to miss out on this prestigious event. Belfast Giants David Rutherford and Jonathan Boxill joined Belfast City Marathon Event Manager Stef Foster to launch the 2017 medal. The new medal takes in the local views of Belfast City Hall, renowned Harland and Wolff Cranes and the famous Titanic Visitor Attraction, incorporated with the official race sponsors.

This year the Belfast Giants will be assembling a relay team to take to the roads on the 1st May, which will include players and coaches and they are calling all relay teams to get entered and run with them.

Mark Brooks, Commercial Manager for the Stena Line Belfast Giants said;

“I am excited to begin a partnership between the Stena Line Belfast Giants and the Belfast Marathon, which is one of the highlights of the year in Northern Ireland. The new medal is a fantastic addition for 2017 and some of our players will be picking up their own medal on 1st May when they will join over 16,000 other competitors in this year’s event!"

The Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon Relay runs alongside the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon event, pitting teams of five runners against each other, each competitor running a leg of 6.2, 3.3, 7.2, 4.5 and 5 miles. So what’s the benefits? How about accurate chip timing which will be located on the back of your team name running bib. A great bespoke medal and t-shirt for each finisher, alongside a text message with your time after the race, plenty of course support and recovery stations and a fantastic running experience.

The relay event is open to businesses, charities, clubs or even groups of friends and is branded by a strong element of friendly competition as teams compete to be seen as the fittest or the fastest. These titles represent not only a desirable PR title, but also bragging rights that last for a full year. There is also special category prizes for the most original team name, organisation that enters the most teams, special merit award and fancy dress award.

This opportunity does not come around every day and is something not to be missed. Simply pick your team, choose a team captain and join 16000 others on the 1st May.

Looking forward to the race, David Seaton, Chairman of the Belfast City Marathon, said “In the past number of years, we have seen our participant numbers grow as there has been a resurgence of running in the local community and further afield. I am delighted we are now able to offer more for our participants. The new medal looks terrific and I am pleased we can now also offer this to relay participants, and what better way to launch the brand new medal than getting on the ice with the Belfast Giants.”
