The Belfast International Returns for 2017!

Mary Peters Track to again host the 2017 Belfast International Athletics Meet

Athletes from Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland and further afield will be in the running for the Belfast International Athletics Meet at the Mary Peters Track on Wednesday 5th July 2017.

Organised by Athletics Northern Ireland the regular sporting fixture, which provided great competition from a pool of well-known local and international athletes. After the success of the 2016 event, 2017 again aims to collaborate many of Northern Ireland’s top competing athletes, who are considering a standard for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The £3m refurbished track is a regular fixture for many of Northern Ireland’s prestige racing events and there is no better place than that of the Mary Peters Track, which opened its lanes in 2013.

It is hoped that this prestigious International event, which is serving as a great warm up for those looking to gain standards for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, will succeed in continuing to attract thousands to the stadium on its Upper Malone Road site by showcasing international and local talent.

NI athlete Adam McMullen (Cursader’s) joined Pamela Brown, President of Athletics Northern Ireland, and recently selected Commonwealth Youth Games athlete Davicia Patterson of Beechmount Harriers to launch the 2017 event at the Mary Peters Track. Both Adam and Davicia having started well to the 2017 track season, with PB’s for each of the athletes. Adam’s recent success was in Clermont, Florida where he jumped an incredible 7.85m to beat his previous PB of 7.84m. Davicia has been set PB’s all-round which has given her a great start to the 2017 season, but also enabled qualification for the Commonwealth Youth Games 400m event in the Bahamas this August. Davicia has recently set PBs in the 200m (26.43), 300m (39.66) and 400m (55.54).

General Secretary of Athletics Northern Ireland, John Allen, said: “This is a fantastic event for everyone involved and provides an opportunity to showcase one of the Country’s top athletics arenas.
