Impressive season opener for McMullen as Ulster U20 Men’s team finish 2nd at Celtic XC

2015 European Indoor and World Student Games competitor Adam McMullen began 2016 in the same vein of form that saw him consistently jump within 10cm of his PB on a number of occasions last year.

The Alan Kennedy coached athlete (Crusaders AC) was exactly that distance behind his 7.80m PB set at last year’s Irish Indoor Championships when he won the Athletics NI Jumps open meeting at Jordanstown with a final round distance of 7.70m. This is an extremely encouraging opener for this early in the year and suggests the 8 metre barrier may well be in his sights for 2016.

Fresh from competing at the European Cross Country Championships last month, James Edgar (City of Lisburn) was the pick of the Ulster Team at the Celtic XC International in Edinburgh on 9th January. Edgar finished 3rd in the U20 Men’s race behind two Irish athletes, Peter Lynch and Pierre Murchan.

This result was helped by Craig McMeechan, Eoin McCann and Fintan Stewart who finished 8th, 10th and 14th respectively to secure 2nd place overall in the U20 team competition.

The other five Ulster age groups narrowly missed out on 3rd places in each age group to finish behind Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Top 10 results were achieved by the following athletes:

5th Clodagh O'Reilly U20

9th Peter Gracey U17

10th Sean Corry U17

9th Niamh Heaney U17

9th Edel Monaghan U20

Elsewhere at the BMC indoor meeting in Sheffield Youth Academy athlete Callum Crawford-Walker opened up with an indoor 800m PB of 1.55.24 when finishing 3rd in the Men’s C race.
