MBE Awarded to Athletics Northern Irelands John Allen

John Allen, General Secretary Athletics Northern Ireland

Athletics Northern Ireland is delighted that its Secretary John Allen has been awarded the MBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours list for services to Athletics.

Former teacher John has been involved in Athletics for almost 50 years from his early time as a NI competitor through to his involvement in the development of the sport as an administrator, policy maker and event organiser. He has been Secretary of the Athletics NI for almost 25 years during which time he has overseen huge changes and a major expansion of the sport.

In the past 15 years John has worked in a voluntary capacity at Athletics House in a virtually full time role of Chief Executive. During this period he facilitated the development of athletics into what is now a sizeable business with significant funding and staffing. He continues to play a key role in the ongoing planning, promotion and organisation of the sport.

Athletics is pleased that the Honours Award is an official recognition of John's major contribution to the Sport over many years.

Athletics NI also wishes to congratulate Dromore Athletics Coach Michael McGreevy on his BEM award for services to the Sport and the community in Dromore.
