NI and Ulster 5k Road Race Championships

Almost perfect conditions welcomed the one thousand or so athletes who gathered at Queens PEC for the annual running of the Queens 5k which once again hosted the NI and Ulster 5k Championships.

The good conditions led to many fast times with the winner of the men’s race, Conall McClean (CNDR) finishing in 14.12 to take one second off Nick Griggs course record set in 2022. Craig McMeechan (North Down) finished seven seconds behind in a big pb of 14.19. Neil Johnston (Annadale Striders) finished third in 14.26. The team race was a very close competition with Candour TC just finishing ahead of Annadale Striders by one second. The young Lagan Valley squad finished a credible third.

In the women’s race pre-race favourite Hannah Gilliland (Annadale Striders), running a pb of 16.06 had a comfortable win from teammate Lea Adamson who also ran a pb of 16.21. There was another pb for Kirsti Forster (Willowfield) who finished third in 16.37. The team race was also a very close contest with Annadale losing out to Willowfield by just two seconds. Lagan Valley once again secured the bronze medal.
