OFlaherty and Mageean Secure European Selection

Rio Olympians Kerry O'Flaherty and Ciara Mageean secured automatic selection yesterday for the European Cross Country   Championships in Italy when they finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the National Championships in Abbotstown.

Irish U22 international Shona Heaslip was the surprise winner in the 8k event, however both O'Flaherty and Mageean were delighted with their rostrum placings in what was probably their best ever cross country performances.

Steeplechase specialist Kerry was 4th in these trials a year ago and will now be determined to make the Irish scoring team of 4 in the Europeans in Italy in 3 weeks’ time. A year ago she was a member of the Irish bronze medal winning team.

European cross country will be new territory for Mageean .The European 1,500 metres bronze medallist had her best track season ever this year culminating in yet another NI record of 4 mins 1 sec in Paris.  Her speed could be a major advantage in Italy.
