Hannah Irwin at European Road Running Championships

Northern Ireland athletes made their presence felt on both international and local stages over the weekend, with strong performances at the European Road Running Championships in Brussels and standout results closer to home at the opening Fab 5 meet in Belfast.
There were three NI athletes involved in the European Road Running Championships held over the weekend in Brussels. On Saturday Hannah Irwin (Cambridge and Coleridge) running for GB and Ann Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny AC) running for Ireland were in action in the Half Marathon. Hannah finished a very credible 16th and Ann Marie 26th in the Elite Women’s race.
On Sunday in the Elite women’s 10k Emily Haggard Kearney (NBH) representing Ireland ran very close to her pb, running 32.51 to finish 30th .
Commonwealth Games Heptathlon representative Anna McCauley opened her outdoor season in Loughborough with a PB in the 200m of 24.95 (2.0) and a win in the 100mH 14.63 (2.1). McCauley also jumped a Long Jump PB of 5.88m.
Finn O’Neill (Lifford Strabane) completed his first senior Decathlon in Texas scoring 6339 with PBs along the way of 15.49 110mH, 35.75m Discus and 4:31.91 1500m.
Closer to home there were excellent local performances in warm conditions in the first of the Fab 5 competitions at Mary Peters Track.
Highlight of the many 100m races was a superb PB of 10.77 for U18 Joshua Awujoola (Fast Twitch AC) with addition impress race wins for U20 athletes Arnar Brynjarsson (City of Lisburn AC) in 10.94, Jamie Moffatt (North Down AC) in 10.98 and Jack O’Connor (St Michael’s College AC) in 11.00. Kai Harris from Orangegrove AC who is U15 on the UK age groups ran an impressive 11.32 to win the U16 race. The highlight of the women’s race was U18 Isla Henry who ran a PB of 12.48. Madison Welby had an impressive gun to tape victory in the U16 girls 1500m running 4.35.35 which was a 10 second pb for her.
