Weekend round up 7th of February

It was a weekend full of standout performances for NI and Ulster athletes, with impressive results on the track, indoors, and in cross-country competition both at home and abroad.

The star performance of the weekend came from Olympic 4x400m squad member Rachel McCann (North Down / QUB) with the Ian Neely coached athlete smashing her PB indoors and out with a dominant 53.31 second run to win the Irish University Championships in Dublin on Sunday.  This puts Rachel in a strong position to make the European Indoor 4x400m team going to next month’s championships in the Netherlands. Also in the two-lap indoor event, European U18 bronze medallist Conor Kelly (Derry Track Club) set an outright 400m PB of 46.80 to win the England Age Group Championships.

NI and Ulster had men’s and women’s U20 teams competing at the Celtic XC International which was held in conjunction with the UK Cross Challenge and provided a high level of competition for our local athletes.

In the women’s U20 race Lucy Foster (Willowfield) finished a very strong 9th place with Elsa Moore (Lifford and Strabane) 24th Ava Diver (Beechmount) 25th and Katie Graham (Lagan Valley) 28th. The U20 men’s team was led home by Oisin McGloin (Lagan Valley) in 17th place, Finn Diver (Beechmount) 23rd Tom Fleming (Loughview) 25th, and Noah Harper (Lagan Valley) 37th. The NI team finished 3rd in the team standings.

Roise Roberts (Candour) representing the Irish U23 team had an excellent run finishing 9th overall and second U23 in the women’s senior race. Rebecca Rossiter (Candour) finished 31st . In the U17 races Madison Welby (COLAC) ran very strongly to finish 6th helping the Irish team to victory. In the same race Kari Foster (Willowfield) representing the Irish development team finished 22nd. In the boy’s U17 race Rory Armstrong (Lagan Valley) also representing the Irish Development team finished 28th.

Elsewhere this weekend, Ellie McCartney backed up recent strong performances with a 4.26m 3rd place performance at the Air Loughborough event. On Friday night Roisin Flanagan (Finn Valley) kicked off her 2025 indoor season with an 9.03.46 clocking over 3000m in Metz. In Boston on Saturday night at the Bruce Lehane meeting Tony McCambridge (Candour) ran a pb of 8.12.13 to finish 6th in his section. Charlie Jones (Lagan Valley) now studying at Butler University ran a pb of 8.23.95 to finish 2nd in the Fairground International, Indiana.
