30 April 2016
Firmus Open Meeting
Andrew Barkley (City of Lisburn AC/Jackie McKernan) smashed his own Northern Irish U20 Discus record in his first competition of the season. The 2014 European Youth Olympic competitor threw 51.96m at the Firmus meeting on Thursday night to add over two metres to the record (previous record 49.62m) This throw ranks him 3rd in U20 Power of 10 UK rankings.
Following his outstanding victory in the London Mini Marathon, Jack Agnew (Torque Racing Club/Heather Ardis) set yet another PB in the T54 200m. The Youth Academy athlete stopped the clock in 28.05, which currently puts him just outside the top 20 of the 2016 world senior rankings. The time also pushes him further ahead of his closest rivals at the top of the Senior 200m power of 10 UK rankings.
Craig Newell (Ballymena & Antrim AC/ Ian Neely) was the best of the sprinters on the chilly night and opened his outdoor 200m season within 0.30 of his best when taking the victory in 22.24.
Adam McMullen (Cruasders AC/Alan Kennedy) and Amy Foster (City of Lisburn AC/Davy Reid) go up against some of the world’s best athletes in the NTC Pure Elite Open Meeting in Clermont, Florida tomorrow in the Long Jump and 100m/200m respectively.
Both athletes will be seeking to build on excellent indoor and early season form and will be chasing European and perhaps even Olympic qualification standards in the process.
Meanwhile a number of NI athletes will be competing in the British Universities in Bedford this weekend including Irish University medallists Andrew Mellon, Adam McComb and Jonathan Browning. Entry lists and results can be found below.
