Athletics Northern Ireland Cross Country League of to a running start
26 October 2016
The first round of this season’s Athletics Northern Ireland Cross Country league was held in conjunction with the Bobby Rea Memorial races at Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor on Saturday last (22 Oct).
The conditions were perfect for cross country running with a firm but testing course and fine autumn weather. There was a pleasing number or participants in both men’s and women’s sections with 135 men and 102 women finishing and 11 teams scoring points in both sections.
North Down A.C. have taken a clear lead in the women’s division scoring a maximum of 28 points with Foyle Valley in second on 20 points and Omagh third on 16.
The Men’s division is a lot tighter with Newcastle& District in the lead on 25 points, North Down only one point further back on 24 and both North Belfast and Foyle Valley sharing third on 22 points.
This year’s league allows clubs to disregard their score in two of the six pre Christmas fixtures so this will potentially make the situation at the top of the league more unpredictable and more open to tactical decisions by clubs. We will have to wait for another couple of rounds before a pattern might emerge.
The next league event is this coming Saturday (29th) with the Ballydrain Harriers promoted COMBER CUP races at the Billy Neill Playing Pitches near Dundonald.
