Cross Country Season Kicks off in Dublin

The cross country season began in earnest with at the Autumn Open Cross Country Festival at the National Sports Campus Open on Saturday with N.I. athletes looking to show early season form to Euro Cross selectors.

In the Senior Women, Fionnuala McCormack dominated the race to win by 36s from Poland’s Paulina  Kaczynska. Anne-Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny AC / Teresa McDaid) was an impressive 4th only 6 seconds outside the medals and Olympian Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle AC / Richard Rodgers) was a further 8 seconds back in 6th place and completed a Masters over 35 1-2 finish for the pair. City of Derry’s Catherine Whoriskey (Dara Furey) finished in 10th place.

In the men’s race Paddy Hamilton (Slieve Gullion Runners) finished in 11th position and was the first masters athlete home while Seamus Lynch was in 22nd for Newcastle AC. 

European Youth Competitor Craig McMeechan (North Down / Francis Marsh) looks set to continue his excellent track form into the XC season after recording an impressive victory in the Junior Mens race. Craig covered the 6k course in 19.14 and was four seconds ahead of Fearghal Curtin of Youghal A.C.  Patrick McNiff (Heather Ardis) grabbed a top 10 place for Banbridge A.C. with 6th and Lisburn A.C. duo James Edgar (Ardis) and Jonny Whan were 14th and 15th respectively.
