Double European Champion McCormack for IAAF Antrim International Cross Country
06 December 2016
Former double European cross country champion Fionnuala McCormack will once again be competing in the Greenmount Cross Country International at Antrim next month (Saturday 14th January 2017). This meeting is one of 12 IAAF World Cross Country permits and is supported by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.
32 year old McCormack has consistently been the top Irish cross country runner in recent years. 12 months ago she led the Irish team to bronze medals in the Euro Championships for the second consecutive year. Her 4th place follows from two previous individual European victories back in 2011 and 2012.
However the versatile Kilcoole AC athlete would also like to be remembered for her numerous track achievements. At the start of this year the former Olympic steeplechaser was determined to set new standards over longer distances. McCormack achieved this in spectacular fashion starting with a gutsy 4th place in the European Champs 10,000 metres in Amsterdam.
Fionnuala then followed this up in August with probably her greatest ever achievement in the Rio Olympics marathon. She defied the oppressively hot, humid conditions to battle her way through to a memorable 20th place in a PB time of 2 hrs 31 mins 22 secs leaving many world class athletes in her wake.
McCormack has also experienced success at Greenmount with two previous wins to her credit. She will hoping for a hat trick of victories particularly after her impressive win in Spain a few days ago where she defeated some classy African opposition.
Also racing at Greenmount is Kenya's Caroline Kipkirui who is ranked in the World top 20 this year over 5,000 metres.
Previous participants in the long history of this event have included Steve Ovett, Steve Cram, Brendan Foster, Paula Radcliffe, John Treacy and Paul Tergat.
