Gideon Kipsang and Catriona Jennings top the podium at Deep RiverRock Belfast City Half Marathon

18 September 2017

Kenyan star Gideon Kipsang and Irish Olympian Catriona Jennings ran out victorious as over 3,000 competitors took on the 5th annual Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon (Sunday 17th September 2017).

The increasingly popular event started and finished at Ormeau Park and the route covered all parts of the city; a running tour of Belfast’s picturesque landscape.

Local man Stephen Scullion (Clonliffe Harriers) led during the early stages, but Derry Track Club representative Gideon came through strongly and assumed control during the latter part of the race, increasing his lead as the race progressed.

Gideon showed no signs of fatigue following his 15:30 for victory at the Memorial 5k on Friday as he recorded an impressive 1:04:36 for top honours.  Stephen Scullion followed in 1:06:11 for 2nd place, while outgoing Champion Freddy Sittuk (Raheny Shamrock AC) was forced to settle for 3rd place after finishing in 1:10:05.

London 2012 marathoner Catriona Jennings (Letterkenny AC) dominated the ladies race, winning comfortably.  The AAI National Marathon medallist looked back to her best as she broke the tape in 1:15:37 for 1st place.

Judith Lowry (City of Lisburn AC), Ciara Toner (Springwell Running Club) and Sarahjane Guiney (Unattached) battled it out for the remaining podium places.  Judith took 2nd place in 1:23:25, just eight seconds ahead of Ciara who finished in 1:23:33 (3rd place).  Sarahjane followed in 1:24:07 (4th place).
