North Belfast and North Down Top of the table for the Athletics NI XC League
07 November 2016
The third round of the Athletics Northern Ireland Cross Country league was held on Saturday (5th) in conjunction with the McConnell Shield event at Sixmilewater Park in Ballyclare. Again there was a very pleasing turnout with 162 finishing the Men’s race and 131 in the Women’s. Fourteen teams finished in the Men’s secioin and thirteen in the Women’s.
In the Men’s division North Belfast Harriers have moved into a clear lead having now accumulated 75 points over the 3 rounds and North Down some way behing on 56 points. However it neither Foyle Valley nor Newcastle and District took part in this round presumably taking advantage of the rule which allows clubs to disregard their lowest two pre Christmas scores from the possible six races. It will take at least another two rounds before the tactical decisions of clubs become clear.
In the Women’s section North Down scored their third maximum in a row and now have a commanding lead though nearest rivals Foyle Valley chose not to compete in this round and so the present scores do not necessarily give the full picture.
The next league event will be the MIGHTY OAKS CROSS COUNTRY on 19th November hosted by Acorns A.C. in Cookstown.
