Strong fields for this weekends NI and Ulster Cross Country Champs in Donegal

04 November 2016

The second day of this season’s age group Northern Ireland and Ulster cross country championships takes place this coming Sunday (6th) at the Finn Valley Athletics Centre in Stranorlar Co Donegal.

The first race is scheduled for 11.30 and there will be a total of ten age group races - Under 11,13,15,17 &19 for both boys and girls. In addition the Men’s and Women’s Novice Championships will take place directly after the conclusion of the age group races.

Following the even age group championships two weeks ago in Rostrevor a number of exciting races are in prospect with a number of young athletes who were prominent at that event renewing their rivalry.

The Under 15 girl’s race should be particularly exciting with at least five girls - Cara Laverty (City of Derry Spartans), Hannah Cochrane (City of Lisburn), Megan Briggs (North Down), Murphy Millar (North Down), and Rebecca Wallace (North Belfast) - all with a distinct chance of the title.

The Under 17 Girls event also looks to be exciting with Niamh Carr (Springwell) and Kate Gourley (City of Lisburn) expected to be up among the front runners.

In the Boys events the Under 17 race has the prospect to be best of the day with Conor Maguire (Monaghan Phoenix), Alex Boyd (Lagan Valley), Matthew Caves (Willowfield) and Andrew Gordon (Springwell) all looking to have a good chance.

In the U19 race Craig McMeechan (North Down) Fintan Stewart (City of Derry Spartans) and Christy Conlan (Beechmount) will renew their rivalry from Rostrevor with McMeechan probably having the edge again.

The leading runners in all age group races will qualify for the All Ireland Championships in Dundalk on Sunday 11th December.
