Good weekend performance from Mageean, Ganiel and Pollock

22 February 2016

Portaferry's Ciara Mageean continued her superb season in the weekend's Millrose Games in New York when she set a new Irish Indoor Mile record of 4 mins 28.40 secs which takes 1.65 secs off the previous best time.

Roisin McGettigan's 2009 Irish record of 4.30.06 was always under threat from the Lisburn AC woman who only two weeks ago set a new Irish 1,500 metres Indoors record of 4 mins 8.66 secs in Germany. In New York Ciara almost beat that time when she raced through the 1,500 metres mark in 4.09.01. At that stage she was in 3rd place in a world class field led by former World Outdoors bronze medallist Shannon Rowbury.

In the closing stages Ciara drifted back a little to finish 6th but still held on for the record which is a new PB by some 10 secs. In the process she took several major scalps. Rowbury took the victory in 4.24.39.

It is not yet certain as to whether Ciara will compete in next month's World Indoors in Portland, US. She is already qualified for the Olympics in Rio.

Also competing at the weekend were Gladys Ganiel who finished 13th in the women’s section of the Seville Marathon in a time of 2:38:53. This time is inside the Olympic Qualifying standard for Rio though remains some 1 minute 24 seconds off the 3rd qualifying spot for the Irish Olympic Team.

Paul Pollock won the Wokingham Half Marathon with a time of 63:46 in blustery conditions. This time is inside the qualifying time for the World Half Marathon Championships in Cardiff on 26th March.
