Pollock leads Irish Team for World Half Marathon
10 March 2016
Athletics Ireland has announced that Annadale's Paul Pollock will lead a 5 man Irish team which will compete in the World Half Marathon Championships in Cardiff in 10 days time.
The 29 year old Holywood doctor considers Cardiff an integral part of his preparations to make the Rio Olympics Marathon this summer. After Cardiff Paul will race in the London Marathon next month where he must gain a time faster than 2 mins 15mins 14 secs which is the 3rd fastest Irish time currently held by Clonliffe's Sergiu Ciobanu. As only 3 athletes will travel to Rio Pollock must overtake that time which is 24 secs faster than his current best.
Paul is however confident he can achieve this and a good Cardiff performance will boost his confidence. The omens are good following recent excellent road race performances plus the fact that he finished an outstanding 30th in the World Half two years ago in a huge PB of 62.10.
Pollock will be supported in Cardiff by two other Northern Irish athletes Kevin Seaward of St Malachy's and American based Thomas Frazer. Ciobanu and Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham make up the five man Irish team.
Meanwhile Ulster's Mark English will compete over 800 metres in next week's World Indoors in Oregon. The UCD student is hoping to follow on from his success a year ago when the snatched silver in the European Indoors in Prague.
