U23 European Athletics Championships

Massive congratulations to the NI & Ulster athletes who competed at the U23 European Athletics Championships last week for Ireland.

Day 2 of the championships saw Oliver Swinney (Speed Development Project) compete in a stacked 100m heat 2, running a time of 10.66 and finishing 7th. Later on that day, Callum Baird (Ballymena & Antrim AC) was up in heat 4 of the 400m, crossing the line in 47.26 for 5th place. The Ballymena & Antrim AC athlete missed out on reaching the semi-finals.

On Day 3, Callum Morgan (CNDR Track Club) was up against a competitive 5000m field. Finishing strong in a time of 14:14.73 in 14th place. Day 4, saw Sean McGinley (Finn Valley AC) start the 3000m Steeplechase but unfortunately he did not finish due to an injury. Later on that day, Callum Baird was in heat 1 of the 4x400m relay where Ireland placed 5th, qualifying for the final the next day. Baird’s individual run clocked 45.91 in the second leg of the relay. Moving onto Day 5, with team Ireland in the final of the 4x400m relay, finishing 8th with Baird individually running 46.21.

That rounds up the performances from the NI & Ulster athletes representing Ireland. Competing at a European Championship is a fantastic honour, these athletes should be very proud of this achievement.

Another week, another Irish record broken. Last Friday night Nick Griggs (CNDR Track Club/Puma) ran 3:55.73 in the Mile at the Morton Games. Lowering his previous outdoor U20 Mile record of 3:58.51 which he ran at last year’s Morton Games.
