The Mary Peters Track in Belfast hosted this year’s SIAB Track and Field Championships which saw the best U18 athletes from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales compete. Ten Ulster Schools athletes competed for Ireland and came away with five Individual medals.

Many congratulations to Ben Sykes (Orangegrove AC) and Joshua Awujoola (Fast Twitch AC) on their selection for the 4x100m relay for the forthcoming World U20 Championships which will be held in Oregon from the 5th to the 9th of August.

Hot, sunny weather over the weekend provided challenging conditions for our athletes, but despite the heat there were plenty of outstanding performances across the track and field.

The National U20/23 Championships were held over the weekend in Tullamore and produced another medal haul for our young athletes. It was the field events that brought most successes with three gold’s four silvers and three bronzes.

It promises to be a busy fortnight of international athletics, with Northern Irish athletes set to compete at both the European U18 Championships and the Schools International Athletic Board (SIAB) Championships.

Our NI juvenile athletes brought back an impressive haul of twenty-four medals from the Irish Juvenile Championships which were held in Tullamore over the weekend.

Many of our top age group athletes competed this weekend at the Tailteann Games in Carlow. This is one of the oldest events on the athletics calendar and serves as a trial for selection to the SIABS athletics International which will be held in Belfast on the 18th of July.

Athletics NI are pleased to announce the Northern Ireland team that will compete in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games which will be held in Glasgow from the 23rd of July.

The NI and Ulster Senior Track and Field Championships provided athletes with one final opportunity to impress Commonwealth Games selectors or secure late qualification standards. Although difficult blustery conditions scuppered any fast times, the weekend still produced a number of outstanding performances across the track and field events.
