Selection Policy for self-funded Anglo Celtic Plate 100k Home International 2019

Date: 24th March 2019

Venue: North Inch Park, Perth, Scotland

Age Group: Senior

Northern Ireland & Ulster team: Up to five (5) Men and five (5) Women (100km)

Athletics Northern Ireland will be taking a team to the Anglo Celtic Plate 100km Home International Competition as a self-funded development event. A development event means that selections will be made on the basis of athletes showing that they are progressing towards selection for higher level competitions. For Ultra-distances this means the IAU World or European Championships.

The aim of the selection for this competition is to provide an opportunity for ultra-distance athletes on the international competition pathway to prepare for future international competition.

Selection Timeline

All athletes must email Ed Smith, Team Leader for Ultra Running, to express interest by 17th December 2018 and should include a CV outlining performances since January 2017 that they would like to be considered in the selection meeting.

The date of the selection meeting will be the week beginning 17th December.

Selection Panel

Selections will be made by the selection panel comprising

  1. Ultra-Distance Team Leader, Ed Smith (voting)
  2. The Athletics NI Chairman, David Seaton, or other board member if unavailable (Voting)
  3. The Director of Coaching and Athlete Development, Jackie Newton, or other staff member if unavailable (voting)

The Team Leader may also (at his discretion) seek assistance (in a non-voting capacity) from anyone else he/she feels may be of help.

Any voting member of the Selection Panel shall declare his or her conflict of interest in respect of any selection issue and shall not be entitled to vote on that issue.

Selection criteria

The following consideration standards, that must have been achieved since 1st January 2017, will be taken into account when athletes are considered for selection:

Men – 100k

100k – 8:30:00

Women – 100k

100k – 9:30:00

Performances in other certified ultra-distance races since 1st January 2017 may also be taken into consideration.

Where there are fewer athletes with the consideration standard (or a performance that is comparable) than the team size, numbers will not be back filled. Qualification performances must be achieved between 1 January 2017 and 17th December 2018.

In addition, the following may be taken into consideration:

  • Documented evidence that athletes are committed to their own development and have shown progression in the last two years
  • Adherence to the Code of Conduct and any outstanding disciplinary matters

The criteria above are not listed in any order of priority and those involved in selecting will exercise
discretion fairly and without bias in making selection decisions.
