NI & Ulster Combined Events Team Selection Policy – Manchester 4/5 August

Athletics Northern Ireland in conjunction with Ulster Athletics will be taking a team to this year’s Home Countries International & England Athletics U15/U17 CE Championships in Manchester from 4th – 5th August 2018. Consideration Standards for selection have been set and are listed below. Any athletes eligible to compete for Northern Ireland & Ulster may be considered based on their 2017-2018 performance record.

Expression of interest (Closing date 20th June)

Any athlete wishing to compete will be required to submit an expression of interest form online at the following link. We will use this list of athletes when selecting athletes at the end of June.


Selection Panel

Selections will be made by the Athletics Northern Ireland & Ulster Athletics selection panel comprising

  1. a) A member of Athletics Ulster (Voting)
  2. b) The Athletics Northern Ireland Coaching and Athlete Development (voting)
  3. c) A representative of the Athletics NI Track and Field Committee (Voting)

This panel will be assisted by

The Athletics Northern Ireland General Secretary, who may also (at his discretion) seek assistance (in a non-voting capacity) from anyone else he/she feels may be of help.

Any voting member of the Selection Panel shall declare his or her conflict of interest in respect of any selection issue and shall not be entitled to vote on that issue.


Selection Process – Home Countries International

Teams will be comprised of the following up to a maximum of 8 athletes:

Mens Decathlon and Womens Heptathlon:
1 x Senior
1x U23


Selections will be based on the following criteria.

UK Power of 10 ranking based on performances in 2017 - 2018

  • Minimum standards of 4200 points (women) and 5000 points (men) have been set for this international based on top 40 power of 10 rankings
  • Selection will also be based on rankings and therefore the ability to achieve as high a placing at the International as possible.
  • Athletes who are not highly ranked but who are showing a progression towards senior success will be considered.

Selections will be made on Monday 21st of June.

Selection Process – England U17 / U15 Championships

Selection for this developmental team will be based on the long term aim of developing a strong combined events team for future internationals (Home Countries, Age Group Major Championships and Commonwealth Games). A maximum of 8 athletes will be selected across all age groups.

U17 Men Decathlon over 2 days:
100m, Long Jump, Shot, High Jump, 400m, 100m Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, 1500m
U15 Men Octathlon over 1 day:
100m, High Jump, 400m, 80m Hurdles, Pole Vault, Discus, Javelin, 1500m
U17 Women Heptathlon over 2 days:
80m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, 200m, Long Jump, Javelin, 800m
U15 Women Hexathlon over 1 day:
75m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, Long Jump, Javelin, 800m

Please note: Selected athletes will be invited to squad sessions to practice unfamiliar events (Boys Pole Vault, Javelin and Discus / Girls Javelin)

Athletes who have shown ability for and a commitment to Combined Events will be considered for selection based on the following competition results:

  • Ulster and Irish Schools Combined Events 2017
  • Schools Combined Events International 2017
  • AAI Combined Events Championships 2017
  • NI & Ulster Combined Events Championships 2017
  • AAI Combined Events Championships Indoors 2018
  • AAI Combined Events Championships Outdoors 2018



Under 15 Competitors must be 13 or 14 years of age on 31st August 2018

Under 17 Competitors must be 15 or 16 years of age on 31st August 2018

Athletes may compete outside their age group as defined in UK:Athletics Rules (Rule 107) but cannot compete in the same event in two different age groups.
