UK Inter Counties Cross Country Selection 2020

Senior, Junior (U20) and Intermediate (U17)

Date: 7th March 2020

Age Groups are defined by UK Athletics:

Men and Women under 17 years as at Midnight 31st August/1st September 2019

Men and Women under 20 years as at Midnight 31st December 2020

Senior Men and Women over 20 years as at Midnight 31st December 2020

 

NI & Ulster Teams: Up to 6 Men and 6 Women (Senior); Up to 4 Men and 4 Women (U20 and U17). Where a team is likely to compete for a top 5 place, an additional 2 athletes may be selected.

The aim of the selection for this competition is to provide a development opportunity for athletes on the Athletics NI Athlete Development Pathway at a level where they will be competitive. Although Athletics NI & Ulster may send as many as six per event, athletes will only be selected if they have shown the potential to compete for top placings in the individual or team event. Athletics NI reserve the right to send incomplete teams to this competition.

Selection Timeline

A long list will be selected of no more than 12 in the U17 and U20 age groups and up to 15 in the seniors. The long lists will be selected during the week beginning 20th January with the final selections on the 22nd February after the Senior XC Championships. Only athletes from the long list will be eligible for final selection. Athletes will be notified by the week beginning 27th January if they are on the long list

The race is on 7th March.

Selection Panel

Selections will be made by the Athletics Northern Ireland & Ulster Athletics selection panel comprising

  1. The Cross Country and Road Running Chairman (Voting)
  2. The Director of Coaching and Athlete Development or another staff member if unavailable (voting)
  3. A representative of Ulster Athletics Council (voting)
  4. An additional representative of the Athletics NI Cross Country & Road Running Committee (voting)

The Athletics Northern Ireland Chairman may also (at his discretion) seek assistance (in a non-voting capacity) from anyone else he/she feels may be of help.

Any voting member of the Selection Panel shall declare his or her conflict of interest in respect of any selection issue and shall not be entitled to vote on that issue.

Selection criteria

Senior

Selections for the long list will be taken from the 2019 Bobby Rea International, UKA Cross Challenge races (Cardiff and Liverpool), Irish Senior Cross Country Championships, NCAA National Championships, European Cross-Country Championships and the 2020 Home International Championships.

Selections for the final team will be made after the Northern Ireland & Ulster Senior Championships, to be held in Coleraine on 22nd February 2020 when this race will also be taken into consideration.

U17 and U20

Selections for the long list will be taken from the 2019 UKA Cross Challenge races (Cardiff and Liverpool), Irish Even Age Group Cross Country, Irish Uneven Age Group Cross Country, NI Uneven Age Group Cross Country Championships, European Cross-Country Championships, NCAA National Championships, 2020 Celtic International XC.

Selections for the final team will be taken from the Ulster Schools Cross Country Championships to be held at Mallusk on Wednesday 12th February 2020 when this race will also be taken into consideration.

In addition, the following may be taken into consideration

  • Documented evidence that athletes are committed to their own development and have shown progression in the last two years
  • Adherence to the Code of Conduct and any outstanding disciplinary matters

The criteria above are not listed in any order of priority and those involved in selecting will exercise
discretion fairly and without bias in making selection decisions. In situations where all these factors
have been considered and it remains difficult to split athletes, then 5,000m and 10,000m times on the track and 5k, 10k and half marathon times on the road may also be considered.
