Welsh Athletics U20 International NI & Ulster Team Selection Policy

Athletics Northern Ireland in conjunction with Ulster Athletics will be taking a team to this year’s Welsh International U20 Competition in Cardiff International Sports Campus on Saturday 26th August. Consideration Standards for selection have been set and are listed below. Any athletes eligible to compete for Northern Ireland & Ulster may be considered based on their 2023 outdoor performance record.

Places per events –Due to the competition budget for this International, the team size has been set at 10 athletes. There can only be one athlete per event selected in individual events.

Selection Panel

Selections will be made by a selection panel nominated by the Athletics Northern Ireland Selection Committee which will include a representative of the Ulster Athletic Council.

The Athletics Northern Ireland Statistician

Any voting member of the Selection Panel shall declare his or her conflict of interest in respect of any selection issue and shall not be entitled to vote on that issue.

 

Selection Process

*Athletes must fill in the Expression of Interest at the following link by 30th July at 11:59pm. Only athletes who have achieved the consideration standard should express interest.*

Please note athletes will be required to contribute of £100 towards the costs of travel, two nights’ accommodation and kit.

In making selections, the panel will take account of the following criteria:

  • Percentages of standard achieved in 2023
  • UK Power of 10 ranking (including Ulster athletes from NI & Ulster rankings) based on performances in 2023

Please note that achieving a standard does not guarantee a place on the team and selectors may use their discretion when making decisions. There is no right of appeal for this development event.

Selections will be made the week commencing 31st July 2023.

Successful athletes will be notified by Friday 4th August.

After this point athletes can be deselected following selection for reasons such as injury, disciplinary grounds and availability to fulfil the requirements including travel.

AGE GROUP

Under 20 Competitors must be 17, 18 or 19 years of age on 31st December 2023
