Staying Safe on the Run: A Workshop for Female Runners

Are you a female runner who feels anxious about running alone? Do you worry about safety, especially on rural or less busy routes? You’re not alone. A recent survey by the Mid Ulster Women’s Network found that 72% of local women have altered their running schedules to avoid being out at night due to concerns over safety. Whether it’s verbal harassment, poorly lit streets, or the isolation of rural roads, these worries impact when and where women feel safe to run.

That’s why we’re hosting 'Staying Safe on the Run: A Workshop for Female Runners,' an empowering session designed to help you feel more confident and secure while running.

Date: Tuesday, 29th October
Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: InVOLve house Magherafelt, BT45 6AB
Price: Free

This 90-minute interactive workshop will cover practical tips for staying safe on your runs, both in urban and rural settings. Led by expert coaches and featuring a guest speaker from the PSNI community team, this session will provide:

  • Safety strategies tailored to running alone or in small groups
  • How to identify and avoid high-risk areas, such as poorly lit streets or secluded spots.
  • Confidence-building techniques to help you feel secure on early morning or late evening runs
  • Engaging activities to help you practice what you learn

While rural roads offer scenic running routes, they often feel less safe due to isolation and minimal foot traffic, especially in areas like Magherafelt, where many women have expressed discomfort. Running in groups is a great way to reduce vulnerability, and local running clubs play a key role in fostering a sense of safety and community. However, many female runners still prefer solo runs or need to train at times when others aren't available.

This workshop is designed to equip you with the skills and confidence to run with peace of mind, no matter where or when you prefer to train.

Why Attend?

  • Improve your safety awareness with practical advice from experts
  • Boost your confidence when running solo or in unfamiliar areas
  • Connect with other female runners and share experiences in a supportive environment
  • Learn directly from PSNI officers about local safety initiatives and how they’re helping runners across Northern Ireland

Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just starting out, this workshop will help you take control of your safety so you can enjoy your runs without fear.

Sign up today and take the first step toward safer running! Register Now.

First Aid Training for Coaches and Leaders

UKA has revised its policy on First Aid provision for Coaches and Leaders so that it is aligned with the HSE requirements under Civil Law and Duty of Care. We are aware that a number of Coaches have already undertaken first aid training as good practice which is great but given recent incidents there will now be a requirement for all UKA Licensed Coaches and Leaders to have a suitable level First Aid Training certificate, renewable every three years in line with the re-licensing process. Details on what sort of First Aid Training Coaches & Leaders will need is available on the below flowchart:
