112 Children Attend Sports Hall Final
04 April 2019
Children from 7 regions across Northern Ireland attended the SportNI Lottery Funded Everybody Active Sports Hall Athletics Final on Wednesday 4th April at the Lagan Valley LeisurePlex.
The children had qualified to the final by competing at the Sports Hall competitions which are an EBA 2020 Initative that took place across a week of events in early February. The final brings together the top 8 boys and 8 girls from each region – Antrim, Belfast, Mourne & Down, Newry, Lisburn & Castlereagh, Ards & North Down and Newtownabbey- to the national final.
The Athletics NI coaching team have been delighted to be able to facilitate the Lisburn & Castlereagh and the North Down & Ards Council areas to deliver events as part of the ongoing relationship with the councils and to sustain the legacy of the Active Communities project.
The children took part in a number of events, including standing long jump, speed bounce, sprints, endurance running, medicine ball push-throw, sprint relays and mixed agility relays.
The Top 3 boys impressed by all securing the same number of points, which is a Sports Hall first. Theo Milligan from Tandragee Primary (Newry); Harrison McGorgan from Bangor Central Primary (Ards & North Down) and Jude Jenkins from Grange Park Primary (Ards & North Down) all won a total of 150 points, which meant they came joint 1st place.
In the girls event it was Meabh Higgins from Our Lady & St Patricks Primary (Mourne & Down) who came 1st with a total of 155 points, while Lexie Rees from Tandragee Primary (Newry) came 2nd with 152 points. In 3rd place is Sophie Kelly-Bradley from St Ita’s Primary (Lisburn & Castlereagh) with a total of 137 points.

Athletics NI would like to thank all the children who took part along with their parents and teachers. We would also like to make a special mention to the students from the various organisations who have been helping out, across the competition week and the final including the South-Eastern Regional College; Northern Regional College; Southern Regional College and Belfast Metropolitan College. The students are currently studying towards their BTEC in Events Management and have been developing their skills in an athletics environment through these competitions.
