7th for Leon Reid in European Championship Final

Despite running in the unfavourable 8th lane, Reid finishes as 7th best 200m sprinter in Europe.

NI Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Leon Reid, took the start line in last night’s high quality 200 metre final. Once more Leon's pace around the bend allowed others to pass him. This time unfortunately his attack in the home straight did not materialise and he drifted back to finish 7th in 20.37 secs which is still one of his fastest ever times.

The race was won by current World champion Ramil Guliyev of Turkey in a Championship record of 19.76 secs.

A rather disconsolate but brutally honest Leon said;

"The Euros are tough. I wanted a top 3 or 4 but it didn't happen. The outside lane was ok but you need to be up there regardless of your lane. I am disappointed as I just didn't have it today. It just wasn't a good run. I will however learn from this and my objective is simply to run faster in future".

In last night's 800 metres heats former European bronze medallists Mark English has had major problems this season recovering from injury. This was reflected in his race where he always struggled to stay with the pace. The 25-year-old medical student eventually finished in 8th place albeit in a season's best time of 1:48.98 and did not progress further.
