ANIs Heather Ardis Shortlisted for Local Heroes Award

Athletics NI’s Para Development Lead, Heather Ardis has been shortlisted for the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards, for the Local Heroes Awards.

Heather, an employee of Athletics NI for over 20 years, had been recognized for her contribution to athletics, specifically for Buggy Club.

Her nominator stated that:

"I wouldn’t have survived my maternity leave without Buggy Club!

Heather enables recovery, fitness, community, friendship and fun to a group of people who really need it: new parents.

An athletics coach for Athletics NI, Heather started Buggy Club in 2013, shortly after having children herself. What began as a simple idea—a running group for parents with babies—has grown into a vibrant community for women navigating early parenthood.

Thirteen years later, Heather still leads three sessions every week with energy and positivity – what stamina! The club is inclusive and fun, yet professional, welcoming first time runners as well as people marathon training. Heather goes above and beyond to support every participant’s unique needs, giving one-to-one guidance on returning to exercise postnatally for all new participants, holding babies during toilet trips, and even lending someone the trainers off her feet when they forgot their shoes!

Since early 2026, interest in Buggy Club has surged, so, despite no personal gain, Heather doubled the number of sessions available (i.e. doubling her work!). She said she didn't want to turn anyone away. With her brilliant support staff, they currently host up to 32 parents (64 people including babies) on Thursday mornings – wow!

The club has enabled friendship, laughter, and rebuilding strength for 1000’s of women over the years due to Heather’s dedication. She is, without question, a true local hero.”

Among the many sports stars nominated for the prestigious awards evening, is Irish and NI record holder, heptathlete Kate O’Connor, who is a strong contender for the Overall Sports Star of the Year award.

The awards evening will be held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Belfast on Thursday 28th May, with the best of local sport honoured for their remarkable achievements over the last 12 months.
