Athletics Northern Ireland has appointed Fergus Cooper as Interim Chief Executive.

Mr Cooper has previously led 5 charities including Save the Children, Belfast Community Circus School and most recently the Speedwell Trust. He is a specialist interim executive panel member with CO3, the chief officers’ association for the voluntary sector.

Announcing the appointment Chair of Athletics NI, David Abrahams said:

“We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Fergus Cooper as Interim CEO on a short-term contract. He takes up his post on the 1st September working with the Board and membership developing a new strategic plan. This will encompass coordinating with UK Athletics, each of the home countries athletics federations (HCAFs) and developing our relationship with Athletics Ireland. Fergus has a wealth of leadership experience, together with a sports background with the GAA. He is currently the Children’s Officer (safeguarding) with Down GAA and he has coached and managed hurling teams including QUB and Liatroim GAC seniors, and the Down Minor hurling team 2010-2012.”

On his first day Mr Cooper met with staff and communicated with Athletics NI affiliated clubs ahead of the upcoming Belfast International on 11th September.

“I’m delighted to be taking on the interim CEO role working with the Board and with the member clubs as we adapt our sport and offer in these Covid times. Working with UK Athletics and each of the HCAFs, I’ll be implementing the newly updated Code of Sports Governance with its emphasis on participation, safeguarding, leadership and accountability. Athletics NI has great tradition built on the many volunteers at club level who give freely of their time, knowledge and experience. I look forward to working with them and serving their needs.”
