Athletics NI mourns the loss of John Allen MBE
06 May 2025

It is with profound sadness that Athletics Northern Ireland announces the passing of John Allen MBE — a life member, Vice President, former Treasurer, and cherished friend.
John dedicated over five decades to the service and development of athletics in Northern Ireland, leaving an indelible mark. A founding Director of the Belfast City Marathon in 1982 and its Chair in recent years, John's tireless passion helped shape the event into a cornerstone of the city’s sporting life.
His contributions extended far beyond event organisation — as Secretary of Athletics NI for 25 years and a full-time volunteer in a CEO capacity, John guided the sport through transformative growth with wisdom, integrity, and selfless dedication.
Awarded the MBE for services to athletics, John will be remembered not only for his achievements but for the kindness, humility, and mentorship he offered so freely. He was a true gentleman and a beloved pillar of our community.
Our deepest sympathies go to John’s family and all who had the privilege to know and work alongside him. He will be greatly missed, and his legacy will forever inspire the sport he loved.
