Ciara Mageean and John Kelly break their own Northern Ireland records

In only her second outing of the season, Ciara Mageean (Steve Vernon), broke her own Northern Ireland mile record, at the Diamond League in Monaco recently, and officially broke her 1500m record in the same race. Meanwhile, this weekend, John Kelly, coached by his father John Kelly, broke the Northern Ireland Shot Put record for the second time in a month in Ystad, Sweden.

At the Diamond League, in Monaco, on 13th July, Ciara ran a superb 4:19.03 in the mile where Sifan Hassan broke the World Record in 4:12.33. In that race, Ciara broke the Northern Ireland record for the mile and the 1500m, with a 4:01.21 split, and achieved the qualifying times for this year’s World Championships and 2020 Olympics. This weekend, she backed that up with another solid time of 4:03.7, at the Anniversary Games in London ,when she finished 11th in a race that started slow with athletes jostling for position and running wide before Laura Muir, of Scotland, pushed the pace and finished with a 57 second last lap.

Meanwhile, at the Ystadspelan meet, Sweden, John Kelly broke his Northern Ireland record for the second time in only a month and broke the 18 metre barrier, with a superb throw of 18.01. John finished 2nd in the competition to Viktor Gardenkran who threw 18.42.

Both Ciara and John will be in action, this weekend, at the Irish Life Health National Senior Championships. We wish them well and look forward to catching up with them there.
